CyberAlberta's Quantum Readiness Strategy

“Quantum Readiness: Preparing for the Future of Cryptographic Security” analyzes the potential impact of quantum computing on cryptographic security and provides a summary of common approaches to becoming quantum ready. The primary threat quantum computing poses is the threat to current encryption systems that organizations rely on to keep their data secure, especially for data in transit. Efforts to protect against quantum algorithms have already been put forward, with the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) working on a set of post-quantum cryptographic standards.

Alberta's cybersecurity strategy

The CyberAlberta Compliance Framework

The Six Core Functions

Based on NIST CSF

01

GOVERN

Establish and maintain cybersecurity governance, risk management strategy, and supply chain oversight.

02

IDENTIFY

Understand your assets, business environment, and risk posture to prioritize cybersecurity efforts.

03

PROTECT

Implement safeguards for critical infrastructure, access control, data security, and training.

04

DETECT

Deploy continuous monitoring, anomaly detection, and security event analysis capabilities.

05

RESPOND

Execute incident response plans, coordinate communications, and conduct analysis during events.

06

RECOVER

Restore capabilities, implement improvements, and coordinate recovery communications.

The Process

How It Works

Organizations complete a self-assessment across 35 cyber readiness goals, each mapped to one of the six NIST Cybersecurity Framework core functions. The assessment is designed to be straightforward, allowing organizations of any size or maturity level to evaluate their current cybersecurity posture.

Results are benchmarked anonymously against other Alberta organizations, giving participants a clear understanding of how their readiness compares across sectors and peer groups — without exposing any individual organization's data.

The fillable PDF assessment tool is available free to all Communities of Interest (COI) members. Simply download the tool, complete the assessment internally, and submit your results to receive a benchmarked report.

The framework helps organizations identify gaps in their cybersecurity programs, prioritize investments based on risk, and track improvement over time — building a measurable path toward stronger cyber resilience.
